IT’S THAT WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR… - by Melchor Te
It is Christmas time again and the festive mood of the season is catching up with last minute frenzied shopping and parties to attend to here and there. I’m still woozy from all those singing at the lovely residence of Amelia Chuasang-Ting, who played gracious hostess to the officers’ get together Christmas party last December 11 (Friday) in Quezon City. I had a slight sore throat from the belting, warbling, and yodeling but it was so much worth it because the officers, I suppose had a great time listening and sharing songs of yesteryears.
Present during the occasion were most of the officers led by Joyce Dy. She who hails from Sucat, Paranaque took the trouble to go to this other side of the metropolis. Other officers like Edison had to tag along other members of his family like his lovely wife Jenny and elder daughter Elle as they had to leave earlier for other engagements. The pot luck was just suited to the needs of our ages- not too fattening and heavy like lechon but yummy prawns courtesy of Joyce, fried chicken, pork barbeque, buko pandan, chocolate cake, and delicious food of the gods which was personally prepared by Henry Wong’s lovely dentist-wife, Dr. Jocelyn Wong.
And so the night came and we were mesmerized by the beauty of the interior designs of the Amelia’s house. Every nook and cranny of her house seems to blend aesthetically well. The penthouse, with motifs of Thai was engaging and the cozy feel of the hanging “amihan” made the atmosphere invigoratingly comfortable. The karaoke room was spacious, the LCD TV was huge, and the sound system crystal clear, making us inspired to share our “hidden talents”. Amelia was most hospitable, seeing to the very needs of her guests. Pelita, Jocelyn, Richard, Guan Chi, Christopher and wife Deborah, and other officers gamely shared their song numbers. Henry, who had to leave for a while returned to do a Chinese duet with me. I hope we were able to delight the audience. Had Henry stayed throughout, I’m sure he would be deluged with numerous clamor for “More” “More” songs because he is after all, the real minstrel of our batch.
After the rendezvous of songs, President Joyce had a brief meeting with the officers regarding the launching of educational assistance fund for the children of financially needy batchmates starting next school year. The draft was being finalized with Henry as the chairman of this committee. With Christmas spirit in the air and Christ as symbol and essence of this festivity- that of giving, sharing, and loving, we are enlightened and ennobled by the beauty of this project because batch mates who are a little bit better off will emulate Christ teachings by sharing in the education of the children of more needy batchmates. Right there and then, we had instant pledges from Henry, Amelia, and Belinda. At the end of the party, Belinda gave the attendees umbrellas as Christmas giveaways. What a delightful bonus for being there!
And so this get-together party turned out to be enjoyable and empowering. To Joyce, many thanks for initiating this project which we shall call “Joy of Education”, to Amelia, a million thanks for being not only beautiful inside and out but for being magnanimous, to Henry and Belinda, for continuing this saga of uplifting the plight of the underprivileged batch mates, and for the many others who shared in the potluck, in the singing, in coming to the party, in just plain listening, and in everything else, Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year!
